In this final assignment, I have chosen to do an extension topic which is related to my second assignment. On my 2nd assignment, I have talked about how surveillance camera can invade your personal space but for this final assignment, I have brought up how China uses
surveillance camera to create a system called ‘’social credit system’’.
According to my research, the social credit system was created and been used since the year of 2014 and the Chinese government wants the system to be fully used by the year of 2020. The purpose of it is to track on the citizen and to rate them into different tiers, from AAA to D. So, you might ask, how does the system work? Every citizen in China starts with 1000 points, whenever you did something that is beneficial to the Chinese government your social credit will be increased, such as going for a blood donation your points will be gained by 20 or getting mentioned or honoured by the government your credit will be increased by 100. On the other hand, if you did something that is bad to the society your marks will be deducted. For example, a late payment for you credit card you point will be deduct by 20 and if you have made a harassing or even spreading hatful comments on the internet you point will be deducted by 100. The higher points you have to more beneficial you are by the government, let’s say you are in a ‘’AAA’’ rank, you will get a much higher chance to get into a A-league school or university comparing to those who are beneath you, you don’t have to pay any sorts of deposits when you are buying a house and you will also have an upgrade in everything. On the other side, if you’re in tier B or below your life would be not as good as the ones that are in the top tier. For example, you will not be able to purchase things that are online, can’t get into your favourite school even how hard you’ve worked on it and the worst is the government would actually forbid you to travel anywhere in another way it seems to me it is just taking away your basic rights and freedom.
Now Hong Kong have actually been facing these sorts of problem slowly, people have founded out the streetlights in Hong Kong have been replaced with the ones with smart cameras on it and it supports a 5G network. During the protest in Hong Kong, citizens have destroyed one of those streetlights and founded out there has a modem inside of it and all of the data have actually been sent to the Chinese government. And as crazy as it sounds, the Chinese government have had already been watching and been collecting our personal data since we don’t know when.
And for the video that I’ve made this time, instead of myself narrating from the clip like the last video it is me talking for the whole time to the camera. To be honest is quite challenging since this is the first time for me to choose this way to give out information and to present myself. I also found out that I am talking in a slightly slower way when I am talking in front of the camera and this could be improved if I get myself to talk more in front of the camera more often. Overall, I think this is a quite interesting topic for me to cover and to be discussed since that the relationship in China and Hong Kong is quite complicated right now and I hope that this problem will be sorted in no time.
