5 minutes read by Adrian Chau

Attention! Attention! Attention everyone! A brand-new 100% Victorian made high quality streetwear brand – Down&Under is on its way and we need your support!

Start-up concept

Down&Under is an authentic Aussie brand that aims to provide comfort and cultural implication to our customers. Our company aims to be the first Australian streetwear brand to fight our name into the international fashion market. Down&Under’s concept flagship store will be mainly drawing ideas from the iconic streetwear brands from Supreme, Palace and Human Made and we encourage ourselves to be the first Australian streetwear brand to provide comfort and fashionable wears in a sensible price.

In Down&Under, we also aim to create a brand that represents Australian culture and by achieving this goal, our intention is to hire local artists to be our store’s staff so that we could exchange ideas on our product design. Furthermore, Down&Under is also a company that pay cares on the environment and the animal beings, and we wish to protect our eco systems by using only cottons, we promise that animals skins or furs will not be used in our product.

Key Features

Down&Under understands that fashions are ‘’folkways that survivor for only a short time’’. To break this saying and to make our brand to be more sustainable, in each season, Down&Under will be setting a theme and embedding culture to be featured in our products designs in different seasons, for example printing Australian’s iconic bands and artists on our tee-shirts, designing prints and logo based on the aboriginal culture etc. All in all, Down&Under will be a brand that replicates the idea of strong ‘Aussie’ cultures, and we would like to spread these cultural spirit ideas from our products and spread it across the world.

Other features for Down&Under would be the focus on the controls prior to our production quantity. In Down&Under we believe that quality is bigger than quantity and hence, each item that we create will not be in mass production. From this, knowing that our products are promising, we would also like to create a first come first serve buying habit and environment to our customers. Not only we could focus on the quality and the design for our products, but we could also avoid and to prevent fakes merchandise to be leaked into the market. But if that really happens, buyers would be smart enough to identify which ones are fake from the quality and the material that we use.

Since that our products and merchandise are seasonally limited, we strongly encourage our supporters for in store-purchases as this will mostly guaranteed for you to get one of our products. However, optionally, Down&Under will also be creating our company’s website for online purchases. Nonetheless, it will be less efficient comparing to in-store buying as there might be online trafficking. Besides from this, our website will also be featuring an anti-bot software, as this could only be fair other online buyers.

Key Benefits

Economic wise, creating and developing a business could in a way increase the overall GDP of a country because it promotes innovation, self-reliance and generates employment opportunities. But being as the CEO of Down&Under, my goal and my ambition is simple; I hope this brand could provide comfort and cultural beliefs via our products as well as to make this brand internationally known.  Being as an entrepreneur is also for me to keep a learning habit and a mindset of absorbing new knowledge and technology.  And for our customers, nor Down&Under could provide a quality wearable to you in a reasonable price, our company sincerely hopes that our customers could take away some message in our products.

Limitations

Given with the viable retailing industry in Australia, it is foresee that Down&Under will be facing its challenge form this competitive market. Furthermore, with the Covid-19 affection on the local economy, it will be tough for us to find an appropriate investor or shareholder to participate with the partnership for Down&Under. Moreover, opening a store could be costly, as we must pay up for rents, hire staffs and merchandising for products all these are the consequences that we must plan ahead. As the leader of Down&Under, I will be making sure to reduce these potential risks.

Call to action

Thank you for taking your precious time on reading this blog, if you have the same business vision and idea as me and you wish to do a partnership with Down&Under, please do not hesitate on contacting me via email or my cell! Online Identity

In the age of this technological world that we are living in, the creation of social media is one of the biggest and easiest way to connect with each other no matter which part of the world you are in, as long as there is internet connection.  Together with the mobile industry are also developing at the same time, most mobile phone devices or tablets are able to connect to the internet through the power of 3G and 4G hence all users could be able to stay connected with each other at any time.

But how can we be assured that the person that you are talking from the online platform that you use is the actual person that you know? The answer is simple, it is through their online identity and behavior. Online identity can be categorized in serval ways, from their profile pictures, info and even the stuff that they share online etc. these ways could let you identify them because it reflects their social identity.

However, it is also important to protect your online identity in the media world as well, since that there are frauds that would steal your identity to commit a crime, for example stealing money from your bank, getting loans or anything that benefits themselves. Hence, this is why we need to be careful on what information that we chose to put online however the information should be limited.

According to (Brown 2015, p.221) online identity is ‘’the post-structuralist conception of identity involves rejecting the notion of a singular, ‘ture’self and acknowledging that there are multiple ‘selves’.’’ For myself, I use Instagram and WeChat on a daily basis, however the information the I share in these two platforms are totally different.  For example, I use Instagram to share my photos that I have taken with my camera lens mainly, just to make my account more to look more artistic. But on WeChat, I tend not to give out my information a lot since that I do not trust their privacy system at all.

Here are some photos from my Instagram account, the top left corner is my profile picture. The reason that I have chosen to use this picture is because I think that it would draw more attention to other users, and it is also a way to show the younger version of Adrian Chau. Moving on to the bottom, I have also given out brief information of myself, those three flags represents the places that I have studied before and were I am studying currently but it is more likely to be a travel blog I would say. Instagram would let you to share moments as well, which means the user can upload what they called a ‘’story’’ and share it to their followers and it allows you to interact with them and these story will be archived in 24 hours.

In my Instagram account, most of the pages that I have followed are mainly categorized by my friends, celebrities, photographers, fashion trends and sports channel. Therefore, it is also for myself to choose what to see and what am I mainly interested in in order to build up my own community for myself. The reason behind it is because I can get all the latest information that I want.

Identity thieves are all over the world, just as I was doing my blog post, my Facebook account was hacked by someone in Brazil. This is the reason why it is also important to keep your account safe and giving less important information about yourself because you don’t know what their purposes are.  To sum up, the online world surly have limitless information that you can explore and it is no doubt that it is one of the greatest invention among human history however when you have chosen to go into this digital world, you should be careful and choose wisely on what information that you would like the online world know about yourself.

Reflection for Assignment 3

Submit to backup of blogpost with working link to Moodle.

In this final assignment, I have chosen to do an extension topic which is related to my second assignment. On my 2nd assignment, I have talked about how surveillance camera can invade your personal space but for this final assignment, I have brought up how China uses

surveillance camera to create a system called ‘’social credit system’’.

According to my research, the social credit system was created and been used since the year of 2014 and the Chinese government wants the system to be fully used by the year of 2020. The purpose of it is to track on the citizen and to rate them into different tiers, from AAA to D. So, you might ask, how does the system work? Every citizen in China starts with 1000 points, whenever you did something that is beneficial to the Chinese government your social credit will be increased, such as going for a blood donation your points will be gained by 20 or getting mentioned or honoured by the government  your credit will be increased by 100. On the other hand, if you did something that is bad to the society your marks will be deducted. For example, a late payment for you credit card you point will be deduct by 20 and if you have made a harassing or even spreading hatful comments on the internet you point will be deducted by 100. The higher points you have to more beneficial you are by the government, let’s say you are in a ‘’AAA’’ rank, you will get a much higher chance to get into a A-league school or university comparing to those who are beneath you, you don’t have to pay any sorts of deposits when you are buying a house and you will also have an upgrade in everything. On the other side, if you’re in tier B or below your life would be not as good as the ones that are in the top tier. For example, you will not be able to purchase things that are online, can’t get into your favourite school even how hard you’ve worked on it and the worst is the government would actually forbid you to travel anywhere in another way it seems to me it is just taking away your basic rights and freedom.

Now Hong Kong have actually been facing these sorts of problem slowly, people have founded out the streetlights in Hong Kong have been replaced with the ones with smart cameras on it and it supports a 5G network. During the protest in Hong Kong, citizens have destroyed one of those streetlights and founded out there has a modem inside of it and all of the data have actually been sent to the Chinese government. And as crazy as it sounds, the Chinese government have had already been watching and been collecting our personal data since we don’t know when.

And for the video that I’ve made this time, instead of myself narrating from the clip like the last video it is me talking for the whole time to the camera. To be honest is quite challenging since this is the first time for me to choose this way to give out information and to present myself. I also found out that I am talking in a slightly slower way when I am talking in front of the camera and this could be improved if I get myself to talk more in front of the camera more often. Overall, I think this is a quite interesting topic for me to cover and to be discussed since that the relationship in China and Hong Kong is quite complicated right now and I hope that this problem will be sorted in no time.

Assignment Title: Written Reflection

Submission Date: 1st September,2019

`

• Include in this post a 500-600 word written reflection on the following:
o Decisions about what kind of content/messages/meanings you wanted to convey about your chosen context in your video (approx. 100 words)
o Strategies relating to planning, editing, selection of source material, use of overlays, juxtaposition of image and sound, use of music, and so on that you employed in your video (approx. 300 words)
o Lessons you learned, challenges you encountered, and how you resolved any problems you faced (approx. 200 words)
• You may use the first person (‘I’, ‘my’) when writing the reflection

The topic that I have chosen for the second assignment is about surveillance.  According to the Cambridge dictionary, the meaning of surveillance is ‘’the careful watching of a person or place, especially by the police or government because of a crime that has happened or is expected.’’ Surveillance can be a good thing to the society and yet privacy could also be invaded as the same time, therefor the main idea of this video is to discuss the pros and cons about surveillance.

For the planning part, our lecturer Bob have told us to do some research about our topic during class and he also gave out information for each topic, videos were also shown so that we could get more ideas while we are doing our assignment. For the editing part, I will be using iMovie as my editing software as it is straight forward and easy to handle. But for this assignment, we have to pay attention for copy rights, as I will be using music from an online software called ‘SoundCloud’ for my background music in my video. The music that I have chosen for this video will be defined as ‘lofi’, I think it will give my audience a more relax feeling and meanwhile I will be narrating for the entire video.

Lessons that I have learnt from my last video was my audio wasn’t loud enough, therefor this time I have attached my airpods as my microphone while I was doing my A roll shots and for my B roll, I have used an actual microphone to do the voice over in order to narrate my information and to avoid the audio issue. To conclude, making this was pretty straight forward but there’s also some copy right issue that we have to be aware of.

Decisions about what kind of content/messages/meanings you wanted to convey
about yourself in your video.

We are told to do a self introduction video for this ALM102 class. In the first bit of my video, I have used a 10 second B-roll shot as my opening, the purpose is to let this video to be more interactive with my audiences and to give an idea to them that they are watching my video. The content of this video is pretty straight forward and it is for me to address my audience about myself.

Strategies relating to planning, framing and positioning, shot composition,
engagement with audience, and recording audio that you employed in your video

The planning layout for my video was divided into four parts as B,A,A,B. The first B-roll shot was me walking towards the camera as long and wide shot and background music are used. Moving on to the second part of my video, the vlog beings. I have placed my camera to an eye level and this interaction could let them feel I am actually talking to them and there’s something I would like to address. For the third and fourth part, I have moved my camera to a lower angle as my outro for my video. Various shots are used in my video, and in order to have more engagement with the audience, some hand gestures are applied as well. Audio was not a thing for me to worry since that I was in an indoor area but vloggers must also pay attention on their audio if they are in an outdoor condition.

Lessons you learned, challenges you encountered, and how you resolved any
problems you faced

From making this video, the challenges that i had was minor but the major challenge for me was looking directly and talk, i actually found it awkward and it was a bit embarrassing to be honest. But the fun bit for me was editing the video.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
